Meketa means ‘support’ in Amharic. We are a UK-based organisation that supports families of Jewish origin that have not taken part in the emigration of Ethiopian Jewry to Israel. Many of these families gave up their livelihood in distant villages to come to Gondar (the nearest major city) and register for emigration to Israel. They are living in extreme poverty and with little prospect of improvement in their circumstances. We want to give them the ability to support themselves and their families with dignity.
Our work currently involves two main initiatives: Child Sponsorship (which provides children with the opportunity to go to school and further education) and Livelihood Projects (which furnish adults with the tools and skills to become financially independent). Both these initiatives are overseen in Gondar by field staff from the Kindu Trust.
About the Kindu Trust
The Kindu Trust is a small charity with offices in Gondar and in London, which provides support for families in need amongst the general population of Gondar and other Ethiopian cities. Its team in Gondar are intimately acquainted with all of their beneficiaries and their families, and always on hand to resolve any issues. Kindu Trust is a natural choice of field partner for Meketa as it has great experience and capacity for helping beneficiaries in the Gonder area.
